When a Ball Valve Can Be Used As a Control Valve?

January 14, 2018

If you’ve got basic valve understanding, you’re probably knowledgeable about ball valves — among the most common types of valves available today. A ball valve is generally a quarter-turn valve with a perforated ball at the center to control flow. These valves are known for being durable with excellent shutoff, but do not necessarily offer very exact control. Let us talk about if it is okay to use a ball valve as a control valve.

Though ball valves aren’t the best device to control flow, they are still commonly used due to their cost effectiveness. You may get away with using a ball valve in a program that does not require precise adjustability and control. Ball valves are not very precise because their adjustment isn’t proportionate to the great deal of flow that the open pit provides. There is also ‘slop’ or ‘drama’ between the ball and stem that hinders control. Lastly, the total amount of torque needed to adjust ball valves does not allow for fine adjustment near the “closed” and “open” position.

As with any equipment, you will need to choose the complete process conditions under consideration before selecting your own valve. This includes the product or substance, size of piping, flow rate, etc.. If you’re attempting to restrain an expensive material that you are concerned about squandering, you might rather not rely on a ball valve.

Ball valve to control your process, you may wish to think about different kinds of ball valves depending upon your application. A trunnion or even v-port ball valve will perform better and allow for more precise adjustability in some specific scenarios.
Precise control within your program, a world valve will be more accurate compared to a ball valve. Globe valves are known as the industry standard for control valves because they are good at regulating circulation, whereas ball valves are better for rotational controller without stress fall.
Trunnion ball Valves have an additional mechanical anchoring of the ball on top and bottom. They utilize a splined or keyed stem link that removes any play between the ball and stem. V-port ball valves have a ‘V’ shaped ball instead of the conventional round hole.
